GOVEXEC.com has an article on Astrue’s testimony. The opening paragraph is this:
Quote:
Facing what he called "significant operational distress" at the Social Security Administration, commissioner-nominee Michael Astrue told the Senate Finance Committee Wednesday that rolling furloughs of Social Security employees are imminent unless Congress restores about $200 million in cuts in the agency's budget.
If we trust to this account, Senator Bunning’s comments appear to take the form of “don’t tell me about the problem, just fix it.” How this might be done is left to the fixer. I suppose if only the new COSS will shout “frog” loud enough, everyone will be able to jump higher. _________________ I've posted this in my private capacity. What I post might be wrong. For those readers who don't know Senator Bunning's history (I know him all too well), he was Chairman of the House Social Security Subcommittee before being elected to the Senate, and he has a particular interest in Social Security issues. He is also well known for his fiery temper.

Back when I was a kid, at the Kid Glove Game at Crosley Field, the Reds always seemed to play the Phillies (memory can play tricks with the reality of these things). Jim would toss baseballs into the crowd, with particular attention to us Little Leaguers from Ft. Thomas, although I never got a ball myself. I never voted for the man, but I always received interested responses from him when I wrote to him about Social Security issues.

Love it. Except I am one of the dying (literally and figuratively) breed of smokers (Bluegrass heritage I guess). The Hamilton County Prosecutor has given the Reds a legal opinion that pursuant to the recent Ohio Initiative, there must be no smoking anywhere within the gates of the stadium. Not even in the few ghettos that were previously established in the outside concourses. So unless the Reds start providing in an out privileges, no more Reds games for me. I can't go four hours without a butt.
BTW Lamp, how far off the track can we take this thread?

Bunning's No-hitter was actually a perfect game thrown on Father's Day 1964, the first in the National League for about 80 years and the first in the majors regular season since the 20's. Larsen's in 56 was in the World Series.
Great Pitcher; mediocre Senator. Depth of Social Security knowledge limited to deep musings about disability benefits going only to "the truly disabled", whatever the hell that means...
Traded from the Tigers to the Phillies for Dom Demeter who, for reasons I cannot recall now, was my favorite Phillie at the time.
1964- A magical season for 150 games.
6-1/2 and 12.
You'll excuse me while I open that JW Green I was given at Christmas.....
