Charles Hall's wonderful blog revealed this nifty tidbit:
"The Asbury Park Press, of all places, has posted a database showing the salaries of almost all federal employee as of 2007." Social Security News, at http://socsecnews.blogspot.com/ (last visited June 24, 2008).
It's fun and easy to see how much everybody makes.

I've got to admit (as a former Civil Servant myself) that I cringed when I saw this. It isn't just the ALJs, but even the lowliest GS 5 clerk who's salary is now a matter of public record. I'm sure this has always been a matter of public record, but the instant availability of information on the internet does sometimes give me the creeps. I'm sure the Unions are going to be raising hell, although I don't know that there is any way to shield this information from the public.

This information has been online for years. About once a year someone finds the database and tells people about it, but it never seems to become commonly used for anything.
And I think it would make the "lowliest" employee feel better to know that when i see their salary, compared to others in the office, I often think "that person is underpaid."
I think ALJ Jane Doe gets the same salary as ALJ John Doe does. Now what the disparity is among the other grades is a matter of public record. And if there is a problem there, our great government who seems to like to insert itself into out private lives, can sort it out.
