I've installed the latest version on my main work computer and it is working flawlessly. It is much better than just a few months ago. By installing an add-on named "Wine" I am able to run the very ancient Paradox software (Version 7) that I use for my client database. (It is designed for Windows 98 and it ran in XP without problems.)
I'm slowly going to move all of my word processing and other work files over to the Ubuntu partition. Hopefully I will be able to write the 2008 update to my book on entirely free software.
All of the word processing and spreadsheet software I needed came free with the Ubuntu download (Open Office) Firefox, and all the software to do everything I wanted to do, such as play cds, etc.
I'll let you know how it works out in the next year or so, God willing.
So far I am finding it to be much easier to use than XP, I don't need any virus software, and it is significantly faster booting up. I ran some benchmark tests and the "Wine" extension ran Windows sofware as fast as XP-Professional when calculating Pi to 32 million places. (about 27 minutes, I have a really fast computer.)
Strange how something free can work so well.

My recent switch to a single-boot Ubuntu setup on my Thinkpad T60 simply floors me on a regular basis. Most recently it's had to do with the experience of maintaining the software. Fresh from a very long Windows 2000 experience and a four-month Windows XP experience along with a long-time Linux sys admin role puts me in a great position to assess Ubuntu. Three prior attempts over the years at using Linux as my daily desktop OS had me primed for failure. Well, Ubuntu takes Linux where I've long hoped it would go - easy to use, reliable, dependable, great applications too but more on that later. It has some elegance to it - bet you never heard that about a Linux desktop before.
After Ubuntu, Windows Looks Increasingly Bad, Increasingly Archaic, Increasingly Unfriendly @ LINUX, at http://linux.sys-con.com/read/382946.htm (last visited June 27, 2008).
There is a two day learning curve and I do not suggest that the computer neophyte try to install it from a download unless you know how to burn a bootable disc image. Also, getting commercial DVD's to play took some time to figure out. For the average "nothing special" users, it works well immediately after the install with not too much screwing around.
I suggest selling your Microsoft stock. In about five years or less Microsoft will not be selling very many operating systems, if any. Why pay $140.00 for some hard to install expensive to maintain crap that needs a virus program, when you can get something easier and faster for free?
By the way, if you do not know how to download and create a boot image of the software, send a self-addressed stamped envelope to me (large enough to hold a CD) and I will make one for you. Be sure to tell me what kind of PC you will be using. Give me the model number and manufacture and I will likely be able to sort it out if you do not know if you have a 32-bit or 64-bit machine). _________________ David Traver

I don't know. I have not tried it. I'd be willing to bet that anything you can run on a Microsoft OS will work in Ubuntu.
Here is why. It is easy to install Wine on Ubuntu. Wine is a free Microsoft operating system emulator that mimics any Microsoft operating system. Wine runs any software designed for Microsoft OS as fast or faster than those programs run in a comparable MS operating system. Everything that I have installed into Wine ran fine.
Please note, I suspect that Microsoft brand software (such as Word or Excel or Power Point) that requires machine verification for Microsoft's copyright purposes will not run in Wine. But who cares? The whole point of Ubuntu is to get away from such ownership nonsense. The free replacement software that (such as the Open Office Suite) provided with Ubuntu works much faster than the Microsoft equivalents because the Ubuntu code is cleaner and there are no pauses for virus checks and crashes (among other things.) _________________ David Traver
