At the Sony Open House, Mike Abary (SVP of Information Technology Products Division) shared his view on the Asus Eee and used the expression “race to the bottom” (in terms of pricing) to describe what would happen if consumers would go for ultra-cheap PCs massively. It is an interesting subject, and here is what we think of it at Ubergizmo: given the success of the Eee, it’s not hard to imagine why PC manufacturers keep an eye on the issue.
“Good enough” is a danger for PC Makers
High-end laptops are not going away but $400 laptops like the Eee could put the other sub-$999 laptops in danger, and the volume is huge in this segment. It is interesting to understand why consumers like the Asus Eee (and the likes) to see why there is a potential for a “race to the bottom”. We call it the “good enough” effect.
“Good enough” is the single scariest thing for all technology companies. They maintain their average selling prices (ASP) by improving functionalities (speed, storage…). Now, what if users’ needs do not evolve as quickly as the hardware? Average selling prices (ASP) would spiral down.
How good does "stuff" need to be? There is a tremendous cost in wanting the "best." Usually that cost is not warranted at all. This applies to all sorts of consumer products.
We've started doing our grocery shopping at Aldi, a discount food store. Why not? It's off-brand commodity items are just as good as the branded items. They are "good enough."
An aikido instructor once explained it to me this way. Imagine that you are under the proverbial falling safe. How far do you have to run ? The answer is two steps. That is good enough. Doing more would be wasteful.
Good enough is generally synonymous with efficiency. How good does a law firm need to be? Good enough to win the cases it takes. Does it need to be better than that? No, that would be inefficient. How good does a government agency need to be? Good enough to do the job, that's all we need. More would be waste.

Before you slap down the money for that, you may wish to go to an Apple store and take a look at the new iPhone. I found it replaces a laptop for 95 percent of what I wanted a laptop to do, and I can carry it around in my pocket and it's a phone! Get the new 3G with the larger amount of memory. It's not perfect, but its good enough.
I'm disappointed Apple locks in the operating system and does not allow open source third party applications without close supervision. That's the biggest limitation of that otherwise very nice gadget.
By the way, if you click on this URL with your iPhone and then save it as an icon, you can easily keep up to date with all of the Connect postings without having to navigate around on the page.

My son and daughter each have one and they love it. He could get CNN at the Lions game and text to his wive and show me pictures of his new office. BTW he had to buy a disposable phone for their week end lake house because AT & T did not have service there and he did not have a land line there. I admit it is pretty neat.
