Most marriages in the United States end in divorce. It's probably not a good idea for liberals (like us) to rub the McCain's noses in their adultery when more likely than not the random adult reader will also have gone through a nasty divorce. We Democrats are much better off discussing the issues because the Republicans have little to offer in that regard. They've got no game in that court.
What is worthwhile to point out is that the Republican party has a history of claiming the moral high ground. That is a bizarre delusion on their part. They are just like everybody else except of course, that the Christian community has has a higher divorce rate than the rest of us. The more fundamentalist the Christian religion, the higher the divorce rate. See e.g. http://www.religioustolerance.org/chr_dira.htm
It may be that people flock to the religious right after their lives become disasters. That is, they come into the churches after they are pounded by divorces and other nasty things that life has to offer. Thus, when church members are surveyed the statistics show that they are "divorced" at a higher rate than the rest of us. Whether that is relevant may depend upon how one views the effects of the religion and if there really is such a thing as a real conversion, true spiritual healing, or of course, God. The snarky presentation by the Republicans jeering community organizers and other people of good will suggests there is not. _________________ David Traver

The primary reason I was inspired by Senator Obama was the Keynote speech he made at the Democratic Convention four years ago. The theme that resonated with me more than any other in the speech was Senator Obama's fatigue with the fact that politics over the past twenty years has degenerated into a schoolyard taunting match instead of a discussion of issues. Anyone who supports Senator Obama should take heed of that theme in this election. As David said above (more elegantly), Democrats don't need to dig up this kind of crap. It is entirely irrelevant to the election.
I am particularly impressed by Mrs. McCain's international adoption of a child. That tugs at my heartstrings. It's a great thing.
On the other hand, I understand that her husband had no part in the adoption and he was surprised when his wife came home with the child. That does not tug at my heart strings. It shows a disconnect with the fundamentals of family.
Making adoption affordable and legally possible without years of deadlock and repeated disappointment of failed processes is an essential ingredient of reducing abortion. That Mrs. McCain adopted is more than talk, she walked the walk. Those who are "anti-abortion" without actually adopting a child or taking in foster kids are nothing more than big talkers who have no standing. _________________ David Traver

I respectfully disagree that this issue is irrelevant or out of bounds. Of course, the issues are what should count. But if the other side is going to dictate the grounds rules, then they should have to live with them. Not since Reagan have we had a candidate who is more hypocritical.

The real hypocrisy is what counts, not the insubstantial hypocrisy.

Still, attention must be paid. McCain’s address, though largely a repetitive slew of stump-speech lines and worn G.O.P. orthodoxy, reminded us of what we once liked about the guy: his aspirations to bipartisanship, his heroic service in Vietnam, his twinkle. He took his (often inaccurate) swipes at Obama, but, in winning contrast to Palin and Rudy Giuliani, he wasn’t smug or nasty.
The only problem, of course, is that the entire thing was a sham.
