Posted: Tue Sep 30, 2008 01:15 am Post subject: By the way, did you hear about the Justice Department probe?
In the midst of the failure of America's largest bank, the worst one day loss in Wall Street history, Sarah Palin trying to pass as Tina Fey, and other things too fierce to mention, there is one last fact to point out on this awful day.
Today the Attorney General appointed a special prosecutor to investigate the politicization of hiring in the Justice Department under the watch of Alberto Gonzales. Also, there was an indication that a wide variety of Republican elite, including a former prospect for the Supreme Court, a former Attorney General, and that world class douche nozzle, Karl Rove, will be up against the wall for obstruction of justice.
Of course, President Bush will pardon all his henchmen and henchwomen a the last minute in the last hours of his Presidency. Nobody will be held accountable, nothing at all will come of it. The Constitution will again be used for kindling.
So here is the deal Tom. The report is 392 pages. It took this long and this much work to put together because of a demonstrated pattern of obstruction orchestrated by the White House. The White House refused to cooperate and also instructed the staff within the Attorney General's department to not turn White House work documents over to the Attorney General Michael Mukasey.
Attorney General Michael Mukasey has appointed not a special counsel as I first thought, but a special prosecutor.
Handcuffs to follow.
It's the rule of law. It's what lawyers do. First the indictment, then the handcuffs. It's not the other way around.
Quote:
The Department of Justice on Monday appointed a special prosecutor to pursue an investigation into Alberto Gonzales, former attorney-general, and other former White House officials, raising the spectre of criminal charges against a close ally of President George W. Bush.
The move by Michael Mukasey, the current attorney-general, followed the release of a scathing report by the inspector-general of the justice department, which found that Mr Gonzales had abdicated his responsibility when he oversaw the “arbitrary” removal of nine US attorneys in 2006.
It also found that Mr Gonzales and his then deputy, Paul McNulty, provided Congress with testimony that was “inconsistent, misleading and inaccurate” in many respects after the sacking of the attorneys became public. The scandal prompted the removal of Mr Gonzales after Democratic members of Congress accused the White House of improperly removing the prosecutors for political reasons. . .
For your convenience here is the report: Justice Department report: http://www.usdoj.gov/oig/special/s0809a/final.pdf The summary begins on PDF page 380. The print page number is 356. Attorney General Michael Mukasey is not some wild-ass liberal. Like you he is a former Judge. I suggest you read his report before making further judgments about the merits of the cases. Of course we are all busy so we can't really read the whole report at one sitting. That's why I pointed you to the summary pages.
