I've recently become very frustrated with the stacks of paper cluttering up my home, office and workspace. It's clumsy to wade through when I need a specific piece of information, and I hate keeping up with stuffed file folders. What could I do? I've gone almost completely paperless with
the open source Gscan2PDF application for the Linux platform.
Gscan2PDF allows the user to easily scan multiple pages of a document directly into PDF format, with support for rearranging and renumbering pages. In addition, Gscan2PDF has built in digital character recognition, so much of the text in your documents will be searchable. When saving the final product, you can easily attach metadata like title, subject, author, date, and keywords to your PDF for easy finding with an application like Google Desktop Search, Beagle, or Tracker.
I'm still experimenting with Gscan2PDF and I use it as my primary scanning software for all my work. I noticed that it also opens up all of the TIFF pages on an exhibit file from ODAR with thumbnails of all of the pages. Just go to the directory using the "import image files" icon. Highlight the documents you wish to examine, and hit the return. Click yes to each file to confirm (this takes a few annoying seconds). If you click on every document in the file, it will open them all. You can easily print them all to a big PDF file by selecting "save." The default file format for saves in gscan2pdf is a pdf file. You can also select all or part of a multi-page document to output as a pdf file.
Ubuntu Linux users can get Scan2pdf for free, almost instantly by selecting "Applications" "Add/Remove" search for gscan2pdf, check the box, click apply changes. The software will instantly download, and install itself with all related dependent programs. To run the program, click "Applications" "Graphics" "gscan2pdf."
That's it. Let me know how it works for you. _________________ David Traver
