Precisely the kind of partisan sniping that the American public abhors. As that silly "law professor" knows full well, the issue regarding the Citizens United decision is that it appears to allow foreign corporations WHO OWN US CORPORATIONS to pour money into US elections through/via those US corporations.
What do you think, Olan, when the framers of the Constitution were writing it, who were they talking about when they spoke of "the people," individuals like you and I or did they also have in mind the great trading companies of the day? Mr. Scalia and his "strict constructionist" pals add significantly to the political cynicism that so abounds today, I'm afraid. And don't start me on stare decisis and Citizens United.
I do not want to go there but there are bogymen everywhere.
If a former law professor says something he should at least be correct.
During oral arguments the government said during the 30 days prior to a election books could be banned as well as written (old style) documents - books banned - heck potential library implications too - a very slippery slope insult on freedom. The government said trust us we would not do it. Remember the five member majority was written by Justice Kennedy and there are a history of narrow decisions like Row V. Wade.
I do not know what the answer is to finance issues in campaign laws but as far as free speech let unions speak and George Soros and the "evil corporations" (folks love to assign evil intent) also till there can be a free answer to all. As far as the constitution and what the president says - words mean something.

My goodness, you find some peculiar (and aged) websites. Anyhow, I'll pass on further commentary here and save our favorite troll from making his fun little postings.
8) I guess I'm the troll. I try to stay logged in and not post anymouse. Anyhow, seems the Dems are scrambling, but no problem, the republicans will find someway to screw up. Politicians of any stripe make me sick.

You are??? I'm shocked, SHOCKED I say, to hear this. I never would have imagined it. Never....well, hardly ever.
Politicians are a peculiar breed, no doubt about that. Why anyone chooses it as a career...is hard to understand. But maybe it's good that some people do. All in all, I'd rather have someone who enjoys and is interested in politics running for office than someone who despises what they are trying to get into. The latter makes no sense to me. Now if only the people interested in politics understood that the purpose of it all is to GOVERN WISELY. Sadly, it seems to me that their only thought is that the purpose of politics is to win. That should be step one, not the last/only step.

Maybe not, Tom. Certainly many don't, and in recent years, those who see it that way (govern rather than electioneer all the time) are becoming a vanishing breed. I am quite sure that Bob Dole is delighted to be retired--from politics, at least.
