Error Message? Some users get an error message when trying to post a message. It's not the user's fault. The 404 message is our wall that greets spam posters with notorious IP addresses. Sadly, sometimes the wrong person hits the wall!
Easy solutions: Anybody with an account can post anything just by logging in. Logged in users don't get error messages when they post. No account? Just register, log in. To avoid hackers and spam, I check out the registration. If you are not from Russia or selling Viagra, I will usually appove the registration within 24 hours, and you are ready to post! How do I register or log in? The registration and log in links are in the center of the forum page.
But first, let's set your cookies! Without cookies enabled you cannot post on Connect. - For Firefox, go to Tools, Options, Privacy, and check the box that says "Accept cookies from sites" For "keep until", select "they expire" and OK.
- For Internet Explorer, go to Tools, Internet Options, click the "Privacy" tab, and move the slider down to "low" and OK. (If you find a higher setting works for you, just leave it alone!)
- Some homes with DSL have a firewall in the switch or router that is set up by the internet provider. This prohibits the use of cookies. If this is the case, than the only fix is to have the IP provider turn off the firewall and the one in your operating system or virus protection. Call your internet provider and complain, WTF!
Can I post anonymously? Sure. I added a software trick to our software to allow anonymous postings by registered users without getting a dreaded 403 Forbidden message.
How to use it: Any registered user can post anonymously after posting at least one message logged in. After that, if you do not log in, you will still be able to post anonymously at any time from that computer.
For example. Let's suppose a registered user named "Webster" wanted to post anonymously that she thought that the SSA's suing attorney decision writers for doing their jobs is a batshit crazy idea right out of Kafka. This is something that an employee of the Social Security Administration might want to post anonymously (unless she wants to join the other decision writers!)
If Webster has not first posted after December 2, 2006 logged in as "Webster," Webster should first post some useful but innocuous message logged in as Webster. Then, the Webster would log out, and post a "scandalous" message as "Repo Girl" or any other goofy name, and nobody would be the wiser.
If Webster goes home (or to a different computer down the hall) Webster might have to log in and post something from that computer as "Webster" first before using anonymous posting feature from that computer.
After a logged-in posting, further log ins for anonymous posting from that computer would usually not be required unless the computer's IP address changed, which happens at times for government employees, residential users with crappy Internet providers, or those with dial-up services (yes, some people do use dial-up.)
In general, this should be a completely transparent process for the frequent poster who uses one computer. However, you must log in and post at least one logged-in message to teach Connect about each computer you wish to use for anoymous posting. If this does not work for you, please mess around with it for a while. If it still does not work, please send me a message at 404[at]traverlaw.com with a copy of the error message and I will try to Braille-out a solution that makes you happily anonymous. If you are trying to post while hiding your IP address or if your internet provider rotates IP address frequently, then anonymous posting might never work. Sadly, one user found that he could not post at all. I regret the inconvenience, but there was no other way to stop the spam from China, Russia, and places too fierce to mention.
Did you forget your password? If you forgot your password, maybe you don't want to log out! If you forgot your password and can't log in, just let me know and I will set you up with a new password.
Thanks again for using Connect. It is a pleasure to be your host. _________________ David Traver Attorney Traver & Traver, S.C. P.O.
